IK September 19, 1958 BY THE COMMISSIONERS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, September 19, 1958, marks the birthday of the great Hungarian Patriot, Lajos Kossuth; and WHEREAS, Lajos Kossuth was universally recognized as one oi the greatest orators and statesmen oi his time and used his natural talents and oratorical ability to crusade for human rights and human freedom; and WHEREAS, Lajos Kossuth was the first European statesman who addressed the Congress of the United States in joint session, was an honored guest at the White House, and created a lasting impression in our country when he delivered his last major American address on June 21, 1852, in the form of a lecture, wherein he attributed all of the world's miser­ies to the failure of Christianity in applying the prin­ciples of Christian morality in the policy of nations; and WHEREAS, this great historical personality firmly be­lieved in the policy that all strong and democratic nations should support f ree peoples who are resisting attempted sub­jugation by determined minorities or by outside pressure; and WHEREAS, Lajos Kossuth is the first European statesman and patriot to be honored by the United states Post Office Department in the issuance of its "Champion of Liberty" series of commemorative stamps: NO«, THEREFORE, »I, THÍ COMMISSIONERS OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, do heresy proclaim Friday, September 19, 1958, as KOSSUTH QAV la the Nation’s Capital and' call upon our fellow citizens to demonstrat.- their, sympathy to all of tne free peoples of the worlc who look to us for support ip, raain­C0LUMB1A September 16, 19u8
