FRATERNITY 7 HUNGARIAN DAY IN CONNECTICUT SEPTEMBER 7, 1958 — An Official Statement by His Excellency the Governor —Connecticut residents of Hungarian descent are planning to join in a nationwide observance honoring Louis Kossuth, the great Hungarian patriot who has rightly been called a Magyar apostle of democracy. Soon thereafter, on October 23rd, there will be observed the second anniversary of the Hungarians' valiant struggle for freedom against insurmountable odds. It is most fitting that we in Connecticut, proud of our heritage, pay tribute to such a man as Louis Kossuth, It is equally fitting that we join the Hungarian Freedom Fighters Federation in the anniversary of their revolt against Soviet oppression. Liberty, as we know it, regrettably does not now exist in Louis Kossuth’s native land, but his spirit is unquenchable. The recent deeds of the Hungarian Freedom Fighters show that the struggle which he waged more than a century ago still goes on and never will cease until true freedom is extended to all mankind. In recognition of the contributions made by Louis Kossuth and all other Hungarian patriots to the cause of freedom, I designate Sunday, September 7, 1958, as HUNGARIAN DAY. May our citizens make this day an occasion to recall the deeds and words of Louis Kossuth and to take inspiration from them. We may well remember that on his widely acclaimed speaking tour of the United States in 1851 and 1852, Louis Kossuth declared: “Humanity expects that your glorious Republic will prove to the world that republics are founded on virtue.” How prophetic were those words! Louis Kossuth clearly foresaw the day when the United States would be looked upon as the leader of the free world. May we strive ever to fulfill the expectations which he voiced for us so many years ago. ABRAHAM RIBICOFF, Governor
