ESZENYI, Auditor LOVE WITH PAPRIKA Maria Molnár, the author of “Love With Paprika”, which Harper and Brothers published on April 30, first decided several years ago to write a novel about the happy, pre-war years in Hungary, where she was born and raised. She put her ideas aside, however, as too foreign for Americans to comprehend; but when the memories of her girlhood were revived and contrasted by news of the young Hungarian freedom fighters, she resumed her work. She recently wrote: “Through the Revolution the whole world has suddenly become aware of the fierce Hungarian temperament, its doggedness and independence, and I started to work with new zest and pride. ... I tried to illustrate the happiness of the colorful way of life the Magyars once had, and for which they have so foolishly-heroically fought.” “Love With Paprika” resurrects the carefree past of the early nineteen thirties on a great estate near Budapest, where joy and security were accepted as part of the pattern, and where romance and falling in love were a young girl’s most important adventure. Maria Molnár is the wife of Ferenc Molnár, solo violist of the San Francisco Symphony and Director of the Chamber Music Center at San Francisco State College. Her previous novel, “Katika”, was published by Harpers in 1947.
