Sayres, a New York businessman just back from a tour of India, reports that “no one American official in India speaks Hindustani, while many of the Russian representatives speak it fluently.” Hindi, or Hindustani, would not serve anyone all over India. There are too many district dialects and languages. But it is the key language. Fortunately this lack is no barrier to dealing with top Indian officials. Most of them are graduates of English universities and speak English better than most Americans do. But lack of Hindi and other Indian languages cuts Americans off effectively from Indians below the top level and severely limits our knowledge of India. Russians, on the other hand, have learned not only Hindi but many other Indian dialects and languages. They can talk with the people. How can we — as some American officials love to put it — keep the people “on our side” when we can’t even talk to them?
