JOSEPH KECSKEMETHY, Secretary PROBLEMS ABOUT SOCIAL SECURITY Question: I am a widow and will be eligible to start drawnig social security benefits in May. I own a little farm. Will I still be able to hold title to it, or must I sign it over to the government before I can draw my social security? Answer: Social security benefits are paid as a matter of right. Payments are not based on need. You will be asked no question regarding property ownership or lack of it, as this has no bearing on eligibility to social security payments. Question: I have found out that I am four years older than most of the records I have show. How can this be corrected for social security purposes? I can get the old family Bible. Answer: The family Bible will be adequate, provided the entry of your birth was made in ink. Question: I am told one has to have a birth certificate in order to collect social security. What does one do who doesn’t have a birth certificate? Answer: This information is false. Baptismal certificates, school records, insurance policies, marriage records, etc., all can be used to establish age where there is no birth certificate available.
