FRATERNITY 9 APPEAL* By Michael Vörösmarty** Be true to the land of thy birth, Son of the Magyar race; It gave thee life, and soon its earth Will be thy resting place. Although the world is very wide, This is thy home for aye; Come weal or woe on fortune’s tide, Here thou must live and die. This is the dear, the hallowed soil On which our fathers bled; This, where a thousand years of toil Has bound the mighty dead. Here Árpád’s heroes proudly broke The foeman’s martial band; Here Hunyad’s arms from slavery’s yoke Freed once our Fatherland. Here did thy flag, O Freedom, swell, And over battles wave; In long and deadly fight here fell The bravest of the brave. In spite of fortune’s angry frown, Through war and strife’s fell reign, Though bent, yet never broken down, Our people still remain. And to the world, to every land Our nation boldly says: “A thousand years of toil demand A chance for life or death!” It cannot be that purpose high — It surely cannot be — In vain should wither, droop and die By stern Fate’s dark decree.
