10 TESTVÉRISÉG We are grateful to these veterans of Korea for something else — something that affects our life here and the welfare of our country. Prior to the Korean conflict, we had unfortunately embarked upon a course of expediency rather than of principle in order to eliminate at all costs the holocaust of another war. It was, undoubtedly, this attitude of expediency which breathed life into the now famous Lit- vinoff letter by the late President Roosevelt in which we again resumed diplomatic relations with Russia. It was hoped “that the relations now established between our people may forever remain normal and friendly, and that our nations henceforth may cooperate for their mutual benefit and for the preservation of the peace of the world.” And yet, just shortly before that, President Coolidge reaffirmed the true principle of this country to the effect that “I do not propose to barter away for the privilege of trade any of the cherished rights of humanity. I do not propose to make merchandise of any American principles.” Some of us were either in the camp of defeatism or of smugness. There were those who were convinced that the atom bomb would destroy us all, so let us get it over with as quickly as possible. There were those who were convinced that Russia dare not attack. We have the atom bomb! Some of us were prone to forget that, in having eliminated the dictatorships of Germany, Italy and Japan, we have unwittingly fostered and preserved the greatest dictatorship of them all — communism! And because of Korea and because of the veterans we honor today and men like them, our country became united in a manner not thought possible by the schemers in the Kremlin. They drove home to us the stark reality that we are faced with the possibility of national extinction unless definite action is taken to upset the plans of the Kremlin. They brought to full focus the over-all picture, the distasteful plans of the Kremlin against us. These men made us fully realize the fact that we are dealing with a country whose constitution and cornerstone are based on greed, dishonesty, crime, oppression, godlessness and barbarism. They, in no small measure, changed our thinking from that of political expediency back to a nation of principles. For a nation without principles is doomed to destruction from within. Autocracies and democracies cannot work together in harmony. Those who advocate such feasibility are not facing facts. While we have been trying to consolidate the western democracies into one family, Russia has set out to wreck our economy, political institutions, our friendships, and, at the same time to obtain all our defensive secrets and organize a skeleton force within our borders who could be counted upon when she has considered the time ripe to strike. We are apt to shut our eyes against the painful and shocking truth. The Kremlin is bent upon our total destruction! I know of no other way of judging the future except by the past actions of Russia. Are conquests, treachery, brutality, slavery and human misery necessary to the double talk and professed love and peace which are propagandized by the Kremlin? Must the expressed “blessings” of communism be forced upon us and the free world with fifth column activities, armies, planes, spies and the H-bomb? Are these the weapons of peace and love? The answer is obvious. And if there were any doubts in the minds of some of our citizens as to Russian intentions before Korea, they certainly should be dissipated after Korea. Let us all call upon God, the Parent of the human race, to give us strength, foresight and clear thinking. Let us make certain that the men we honor here today in life, as well as those we commemorate, who have given their lives in this great crusade for decency, liberty and the preservation of basic, human, God-given rights have not given their lives or their services in vain. It is our duty as civilians to dedicate ourselves to the unfinished work which those we honor today have so courageously advanced. To this end, we need the help of all.
