TESTVÉRISÉG 15 Was he telling the truth? Was he telling one word of truth in his whole memorandum? The Slovak answer to this question is an emphatic: No! (17) One may ask whether the views promulgated by Masaryk in his memorandum addressed to the British Foreign Office have undergone any change after the Reds rose to power. A statement made by Ian Masaryk, his son, to former Ambassador J. F. Montgomery on Dec. 31, 1944, excludes all doubts on that score. Said the younger Masaryk: “We want a strong and democratic Poland, but only a Poland which will collaborate with the Soviet Union. We have neither time nor inclination for a different solution of the Polish question. We want a decent and democratic Hungary which will let us live in peace, but only a Hungary which will collaborate with the Soviet Union. The same is true of Yugoslavia, Austria and Rumania.” 32) The Czehs, every single Czeh, hold firmly the tenet that collaboration with Red Russia is the only way for all the created universe to be recognized and tolerated by Slavdom. As long as Soviet Russia calls the tune, the world may dance to its heart’s desire, but only as long. The Czeh brand of democracy would have none other! Unfortunately, a powerful segment of the American press has been doing, all through these critical times, its level best to keep America in the dark concerning the real state of affairs in Red Czehoslovakia. So when, in February 1948, the Communists took over the power in Czeh- land, it came as a bad shock to the misinformed people of the United States. What a wail this segment of the American press sent up heavenward, while the reading public was given the lamentable sob story of “the rape of Czehoslovakia”. 32 33 34> Well, if rape it was, it was strictly of the self-inflicted variety, as it had been earlier after Munich, when the sad story of the “Great Betrayal” of Czehoslovakia had been dished up to the unsuspecting American reading public. That segment of the American press expects its reading public to fall into hysterics whenever those “dear” Czehs are caught trying to put over a nasty deal. Let us look at the facts: “In 1938, the Czehslovak Communist Party was one of the strongest and best disciplined political organizations in the country. It gained strength, too, as a result of Russia’s part in winning World War II. In the May, 1946, elections, held as freely and as democratically as any in Czehoslovakia, the Marxist parties polled 51 percent of the votes cast. While these legal and evolutionary steps could not give the Communists complete and undisputed power, they paved the way for the timely and throughly executed Communist revolution that followed. The “coup” of February, 1948, showed that there was only one political force of consequence, with a program and direction. That force was the Communist Party.” 34) In the election of 1946, the Communist Party of Czehoslovakia polled 38 percent of the total votes cast. We can, with no amount of uncertainty, appraise the makeup of that party. The Slovak, German, Magyar and Polish minorities did not vote the Communist ticket, because they hated the very name of it. The Communist Party of Czehoslovakia was composed of “the powerful trade unions, police, industry and, for all intents and purposes, the army.” 35 36> In other words, it was composed exclusively of the Czehs themselves; so that when the so-called “coup” came in 1948, it was a Czeh “coup”, and if a rape occurred in Czehland in that year, then, as we have said, it was strictly a self-inflicted rape. In the so-called “satellite” countries — Bulgaria, Rumania, Hungary and Albania — the Communists took over the power with the active help of the occupying Russian forces. Not so in Czehoslovakia, where there was not a single Russian soldier to force the hand of the electorate. It should be noted, therefore, that the real land of Red Communism is not Russia, but it is the land of the Czehs, and the sooner the American people will realize this all-important fact, the better it will be. In the meanwhile, that powerful segment of the American press is doing a terrible disservice to the American public. It violates the faith its readers place in it, and actively undermines the very foundations of American society in which the deliberate spreading of this sort of falsehoods may prove a deadly practice. (18) A 151-page publication, issued by the Committee on un-American Activities, U. S. House of Representatives, 1949, and bearing the title, “American Slav Congress”, charges that: “The American Slav Congress is a Moscow-inspired and directed federation of Communist-dominated organizations seeking by methods of propaganda and pressure to subvert the 10,000,000 people in this country of Slavic birth or descent. By means of a nationalistic appeal it strives to enlist our Slavic population in behalf of Russia’s ambitious designs for world empire and simultaneously to incite American Slavs against the land of their adoption.” 36) This publication contains the names of a vast number of member organizations and their officers, totaling more than 1600 names. A formidable organization by all means. While only a dozen organizations are listed in it under “Czehoslovak” identity, the part the people of “golden Prague” are playing in the activities of the American Slav Congress can be conjectured. 32) J.
