Ez év decemberében lesz száz esztendeje, hogy a legnagyobb magyarok egyike, Kossuth Lajos a szabad Amerika földjére lépett, hogy azután innen hirdesse hét hónapon keresztül az egész világnak a magyar nemzet igazságát. Magyarország egész történetében nem volt senki, aki a nemzet jó nevének és becsületének annyi hervadhatatlan szolgálatot tett volna, mint ő. Amint azonban Kossuth is hangoztatta, az amerikai nép példátlan rokonszenve és lelkesedése nem az ő személyének szólt, hanem az ezer esztendős magyar nemzet szabadsága ügyének és államalkotó erényeinek. Az Egyesült Államok a maga lelki gyermekét látta a jövő Magyar- országában. A magyar szabadságharcban Amerika népe a saját forradalmi háborújának megismétlődését ismerte fel s azt remélte, hogy az európai demokrácia, az amerikai példa alapján, először magyar földön fog kivirágozni. Kossuth is ezt akarta és remélte. Nem ő rajta múlott, hogy a remények nem teljesültek. Száz évvel ezelőtt az orosz túlerő gázolta le a magyar nemzetet. Ma ugyanaz az orosz zsarnokság fenyegeti megsemmisítéssel az országot. Ha uj Kossuthunk nincsen, akinek szava tul- harsogná a ma szenvedő magyarok segélykiáltásait, a régi, de örökre halhatatlan Kossuth emlékéhez kell zarándokolnunk. Ezt fogja tenni a hivatalos Amerika mellett az amerikai magyarság is. Egyesületünk méltóképen akarja kivenni részét a megemlékezésből, amelyet az Amerikai Magyar Szövetség fog irányítani. Hogy az erkölcsi segítség mellett az anyagi segítség is meg legyen, Egyesületünk azzal a kérő szóval fordul tagjainkhoz: küldjenek adományokat ennek az emlékezésnek minél sikeresebbé tételére. December, 1951, will be the 100th anniversary of the American journey of Louis Kossuth, one of the greatest sons of the Hungarian nation, who through seven months with unparalleled eloquence preached the just claims of Hungary from the free soil of the United States. There never was in Hungary’s history a man who did more in upholding the honor and good name of the nation than Kossuth. The unequalled sympathy and enthusiasm of the American people, however, was a tribute to the cause of Hungarian liberty and independence rather than to the person of Kossuth. The United States saw its own spiritual child in the Hungary of the future. In the Hungarian war of independence the American people recognized the reenactment of its own Revolutionary War, and hoped that after the American pattern the new European democracy will blossom out from the Hungarian soil. This was Kossuth’s intention and hope, too. That all these hopes were frustrated, was not his fault. One hundred years ago the overwhelming Russian force trampled down the Hungarian nation. Today the same Russian tyranny threatens the nation with complete annihilation. If we haven’t a new Kossuth whose voice could resound above the cries of tortured Hungarians, we must return to the memory of the old and fprever immortal Kossuth! This is what the official United States will do, together with all patriotic Hungarians in America. The Hungarian Reformed Federation of America intends to take part in the commemoration, under the auspices of the American Hungarian Federation. In order to give material aid besides the moral support, your Supreme Council urgently requests all our members to send donations to the Home Office in order to make the centennial as successful as possible.
