6 TESTVÉRISÉG WlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllHllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllira 1 IN PLAIN AMERICAN [ A monthly page conducted by Edmund Vasvary ................................................................................................I........illllllllllll...... Let us begin this new monthly page with the welcome news that the promotion work of our Federation is going on splendidly. The last few months were the most successful in some years in securing new members and issuing new certificates. Whether this is due to the larger number of District Managers, or to the renewed zeal of our entire field force, or to the new non-medical applications, we don’t know yet. One thing we know, however: that the often predicted “slow death” of Magyar-America seems to surpass in slowness the slow-motion pictures of the movies. ♦ The end of Summer always brings the busiest weeks in our Hungarian life. For a number of years Ligonier, Pa., where “the heart of our people of the Reformed Faith beats” through our own Bethlen Home, became the center of these activities during LABOR DAY’S WEEK. This year was no exception. The meeting of the national association of our church elders, ministerial association, directors of the Bethlen Home, Supreme Council of the Hungarian Reformed Federation followed each other, each one attended by an imposing number of people. Popular and scholarly addresses were listened to with eager attention; helpful new resolutions were formulated. The participants left “Mount Moriah” with the conviction that life and work in our churches, in our Federation, in the Bethlen Home is getting gradually more effective, more meaningful and more spiritual. ♦ The triennial convention of the American- Hungarian Federation in New York was an outstanding success. This key organization of our own little world, comprising 54 Protestant, 42 Roman and Greek Catholic churches, 179 civic and benefit associations, and many individuals, is the largest and most important body our own life ever produced. The great interest in this two-day convention was amply shown by the large attendance at the meetings, luncheons and closing banquet. The “Convention Report”, a book of 104 large pages, is a beautifully made volume filled with important testimonials from governors, senators, congressmen, judges, civic and labor leaders. The impressive list is headed by an important letter by President Harry S. Truman, in which the Chief Executive states not only that: “It is a matter of record that the Federation and its membership of American patriots of Hungarian descent have dedicated themselves to the preservation and enhancement of the individual rights and liberties which we Americans experience in our daily lives” — but emphasizes that: “We have neither withdrawn our friendship from the subject peoples of Hungary nor abandoned hope of their ultimate liberation. We hope for the day when we may happily resume with them the cooperative, neighborly relations envisioned in the Charter of the United Nations.” American-Hungarian circles are gratified at the length to which the President is willing to go in expressing his hopes about the future of liberated Hungary. We are happy in the possession of this historic document and firmly believe that what the President says will be proven in the near future to be not only an historic, but a prophetic utterance as well. This highly interesting and important volume is yours for the asking, if you request it from this address: American Hungarian Federation, 1624 Eye St., N. W., Washington 6, D. C. We might mention here that our Hungarian Reformed Federation of America is the largest institutional supporter of the Federation and its noble aims. ♦ We heartily congratulate our sister publication, the “AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA”, on its 50th anniversary. This golden jubilee is a quiet one, remembered mostly by those thousands who have found spiritual nourishment on its pages during by-gone years. May the Almighty use it, and its able editor, the Rev. Dr. Alexander Toth, as His effective means in furthering His Kingdom! ♦ Much more spectacular was the 50th golden anniversary of the New York daily “Amerikai Magyar Népszava”. In its one-day celebration, the management tried to present the finest and best that our life can produce. The “Golden Jubilee Album”, a splendid, illustrated volume of 300 large pages, will be a real landmark, full of rich source material for many years to come
