TESTVÉRISÉG 7 in a more effective way. Today this is possible with the modern forms of insurance policies. With a good 18 or 20 year endowment policy the whole family can be protected. They may enjoy the benefits of the life insurance, such as money for the higher education of the children. But we cannot afford to postpone taking out such policies. We have to act right now, before it is too late. The head of the family who does this is really motivated by the impulse of love. Most people insure the full value of their houses, furniture, business equipment and automobiles, but they do not have insurance upon their own “full value” and that of the members of their family. The fraternal insurance associations are especially worthy of your choice to cover your needs of life insurance, because the fraternal life insurance associations are not profit-making institutions, but are founded by their own members and are governed by the members under the rigid control of the Insurance Departments of the various States. The assets of the associations belong to the members. The directors and the officers are only appointed authorities to handle the assets and to direct the affairs of the association. The money-making and money-saving procedure is therefore unselfish and springs from love. The authorized agent who sells the life insurance and the family-head who buys it for himself and for the family has the comfortable feeling that he is doing a humanitarian and unselfish deed in making life for the family more complete, comfortable and safe. Our Federation is such a fraternal institution, which is in the position to furnish the most modern insurance certificates on endowment and educational forms for the whole family. It also offers sick-benefit insurance. At the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, Pa., it provides for the orphans of our members in a modern home with the best of care and education. It provides care for the aged during their last years in a home-like and pleasant atmosphere. The orphans’ home and the old peoples’ home are being expanded right now by the addition of new buildings and will be in a better position to take care of more orphans and disabled fellow members. It is evident that our Federation is a charitable institution and not merely a profit making business and that by seeking new members the Federation — through the impulse of love — is working for the benefit of the members. It is, therefore, not just an “old saying”, but an inspiring brotherly invitation, when we say this: “Every good family is welcome and will be gladly accepted into our fellowship ...” AZ ARADI 13 VÉRTANÚ 7. GRÓF VÉCSEY KÁROLY Iria: Vasváry Ödön Az apja gazdag mágnás, császári titkos tanácsos, tábornok, ezredtulajdonos. Az anyja német hercegnő, nővére udvarhölgy Bécsben, a fiatal Ferenc József volt nevelőinek egyike, három fivére osztrák katonatiszt — és gróf Vécsey Károly, negyven éven felüli korában mégis a magyar szabadság katonája és vértanúja lett. Valószinü, hogy ez az elhatározása döntötte szerencsétlenségbe a családját: apja megőrült, egyik fivére öngyilkos lett, a másik meghalt s csak egy maradt életben közülök. Amit a császári hatalom és fény adott a családnak, az nagyon sokra kötelezte a család minden tagját. Ezért kellett annak a családtagnak, aki az akasztófáig jó magyar akart maradni, elszenvedni a legtöbbet: Haynau, aki féktelenül gyűlölte Vécseyt, úgy rendelkezett, hogy a kilenc felakasztásra Ítélt tábornok között a kivégzés sorrendjében Vécseynek kell az utolsónak lennie. Ha százan lennének, akkor is Vécsey lenne az utolsó, mondotta a hiéna. 42 éves volt, amikor meghalt. Mint katona, igen jó szervezőnek bizonyult, bár különösebb hadvezéri tehetségei nem voltak, amit azonban vitézséggel próbált pótolni. A szolnoki győzelem Damjanicsnak és neki volt köszönhető, amiért a debreceni országgyűlés köszönetét is mondott a két tábornoknak. Számos ütközetben vett részt, vezette Arad és Temesvár ostromát, ez utóbbit azonban nem sikerült elfoglalnia. Mikor már világos volt, hogy a magyar ügy nemcsak rosszul áll, hanem elveszettnek is tekinthető, Vécsey táborkarának főbb tisztjei közül többen titokban átszöktek az osztrákokhoz. Mikor előzőleg az átmenésről beszéltek egymás között, Vécsey volt az, aki rendkívül szenvedélyes beszédben igyekezett a megingott lelkeket
