Egyszer kivitte őket magával a szántóföldek közé s amint ott járkálnak, szeméhe tűnik egy öreg paraszt, aki négy ökörrel szántogatott csendesen. Mátyás megismerte a pórt, egykori hü katonája volt ifjú korában s furfangos ötleteire még a táborból emlékezett. Megszólította szives leereszkedéssel : — Hát jó öreg, messzi van-e még a messzi? — Bizony, nagyságos uram, csak az ökröm szarváig. — Hát aztán még harminckettő a harminckettő? — Bizony már csak tizenkettő. — De azért meg tudnál még most is fejni három vén bakkecskét? — Meg biz én, nagyságos uram. A király nevetve ment odább. Mikor azután a királyi várba visszakerültek, azt mondta a vele volt három fő- urnak: — No, ha azt akarjátok, hogy kivánataitokat teljesítsem, hát fejtsétek meg nekem azt a három kérdést válaszaival együtt, addig is ne alkalmatlankodjatok kérelmeitekkel. A három főurnak természetesen nem volt előbbvaló gondja, mint hogy felkeressék az öreget s körülfogják, hogy mondja meg: mit jelentett az első kérdés: — Megmondom biz én száz aranyért — szólt az öreg, mert volt esze, hogy ingyen ne beszéljen. Megadták neki szívesen. — Hát uraim, amig fiatal voltam, az volt a messzi: ameddig elláttam szemeimmel, most pedig az ökreim szarváig látok, tehát csak odáig terjed a messzi. — Ez helyes, — mondták a főurak — de hát már most mit jelent a második kérdés? — Azt is megmondhatom, de csak kétszáz aranyért. A föurak vakarták ugyan a fejüket, de lefizették a nagy bírságot. — No hát a második kérdés azt jelenti, hogy hajdan harminckét fogam volt: és most hány van még belőle? Bizony már csak tizenkettő. — Ezt ugyan könnyű lett volna kitalálni, — gondolták az urak, de bezzeg nem úgy a harmadik kérdést. — Hogy oldja meg, hogy fej meg őkelme három bakkecskét? — kérdezték a paraszttól. — Megmondom ezt is, de már csak háromszáz aranyért. A föurak elszörnyedtek, vonakodtak, de minthogy az öreg nem hagyott alkudni magával, megfizették a háromszáz aranyat.-— Hát uraim, — mondja az öreg — igy fejem meg a három bakkecskét, ahogy az imént megfejtem kegyelmeteket. Ezt értette a király őnagysága. A három ur dörmögve ment odább. Vájjon elmond- ták-e azután a királynak, mi volt az értelme a három kérdésnek? Azt már nem tudni.
