SAXICOLA AURITA AND MELANOLEUCA IN THE HUNGARIAN ORNIS. 477 ing. Upon this collection were based those two authentical works 011 the Hungarian Ornis, for the publication of which we are indebted to the Second Ornithological Congress held at Budapest.* The referred to collection has undergone lately a thorough transformation and rearrangement, at which occasion its failings became evident, so that the Direction of the H. N. Museum decided to take the necessary steps towards the completion of it, with reference chiefly to the wanting forms of the Mediterranean avifauna as peculiar to the Hungarian Littoral. The Hungarian National Museum entrusted me therefore with the task, to proceed in the month of May, accompanied by our preparator, to the comitat of Fiume-Modrus in order to make there studies 011 this subject during a fortnight. 1 started on the 5 t h of May and though the aim of my journey was visiting Novi and its environs, I made a short stay at Fuzine lying almot in the centre of the Karst mountains, However the results of this stay were not satisfactory, as the Mediterranean Fauna begins only 011 the other side of the Karst mountains, 011 the bare slopes of the coast. Passing Fiume 1 reached Novi on the 9 t h, where I immediately set to work. The results, which I obtained during a fortnight, are chiefly due to an order of the Hung. Boy. Ministry of Agriculture directing his Forest-Personal to give me all possible assistance in my work and to the kind services of Dr. BOGOSLAV MAZURANIC, M. P., who not only guided me, but also ceded his shooting-grounds, most suitable for collecting purposes. Omitting the different species, which I succeeded to collect and to observe in the environs of Novi, however not yet represented in our collection, but already mentioned in literature as : Sylvia orpheus, Emberiza cirltis, Budytes horealis, Micropas mclba, Columba livia, Caccabis saxalilix etc., I propose to speak in this article only of Saxicola aurita TEMM. and Saxicola melanoleuca (G ÜLD.) On the 11 t h 1 was shooting at rockdoves, inhabiting the inaccessible holes of the rocky precipices of the sea-coast, east of Novi, in a small beach of the borough of Povile, accompanied by Dr. MAZURANIC and M. BUDOLF de H AJDŰ , roy. hung, forester, and had just been delighting in the first specimen brought down, when Preparator B ÁRÁNYOS — who in the mean time bed been going with his walking stick-gun in the surrounding shrubs — approached us helding up in his hand a white and black coloured bird. It was the Eastern Black-throated Chat (Saxicola melanoleuca). His original design was to seek among the shrubs the nest of the Orphean * J. F RIVALDSZKY , Aves Hungaritp. Dr. J. von M ADARÁSZ , Erklärungen zu der aus Anlass des II. Internat. Ornith.Congresses zu Budapest veranlassten Ausstellung der ungarischen Vogelfauna.
