TÁROGATÓ IS sometimes has to consult a dozen or more tomes to answer a question in full detail. Today, not to use the library is to impose a needless handicap on yourself—needless, because there Is no expense involved, and no lack of expert assistance. A young friend of mine who has recently acquainted himself with the library resources and efficiently summed up his surprises by saying, humorously: “You don’t know what you don’t know until you start in to read up on a subject”—meaning that you can’t realize what you have missed until you begin the research. There is always something more to learn, not only In general but on any specific subject; and this is true even of subjects supposedly small in scope. I had that proved to me several years ago, in a rebuke that I really needed. I had made up my mind that I just about “knew it all” on anthropometry, the science of bodily measurements, physical proportions. Then I ran on to a treatment of the subject that taught me at least a dozen new facts! Keep on reading—and learning. TWO GRACIOUS WOMEN By C. Granville. Our Empire is proud to have at the very pinnacle of its social order, two of the most beautiful women in the world. They are our gracious Queen Elizabeth, and her stately mother-in-law, the Queen Mary, and we so assuredly claim that title for them, not merely because they are attractive in person, but because of the gracious disposition, and the excellent sense of regality that the truly noble nature of each royal lady possesses. Some of us may remember when Queen Mary and her loved husband ascended the British throne, and may also recall the difficult task they had when the worst War of history darkened the first few years of their reign. Then it was that the splendour of Queen Mary’s nature became so pronounced, for through all those difficult times never once did she forget her queenly duties, or attempt to shirk even the least of them. Now we have another Queen, and she displays the same conscientious devotion. She and her royal husband were called to a great task, and with very little time to prepare for it, but they tackled it so splendidly that even today, so soon after their Coronation, they are known as our beloved King and Queen. PRETTY FACES AND UGLY VOICES A few years ago it was said in London, England, that “American women have the prettiest faces and the ugliest voices in the world.” We are not in a position either to contradict or to confirm this statement, but it calls attention to the fact that a fine voice is a most desirable possession for both man and woman. A beautiful face is an undoubted asset, such as most people fully appreciate, but a fine voice is something which has its own value, and that is not small. The low, well-modulated, clear voice is worth a good deal of effort to attain, and it is within reach of most people, If they are but willing to spend the time and effort necessary to its attainment. Especially is this true in regard to public speakers, teachers and all others who come into contact with the public in any capacity where the voice is utilized. It is easy to listen to a good voice, and It is difficult to listen to one which is harsh, high-pitched or unattractive. WINGS Here’s a little puzzle for you bright boys and girls up on your aviation dope. What is the name of the type of plane that has more than threewings; also one that has no wings? Well, you all know a one-winged plane is a monoplane; a biplane has two, and the triplane, three wings or planes. Any plane with four or more wings—some earlymodel planes had five and six wings—is known as a multiplane. There is a new-model plane that has no wings. It is a new type of helicopter or autogyro. It depends entirely upon its rotary, or windmill blades. SKATING SONG By Nancy Byrd Turner Ho, ho, the pond in the hollow Is frozen deep, and the ice is fine! We’re off to try it, and who will follow Out in the cold and clear sunshine? Dipping and curving, wing to wing, It’s almost the same as being a swallow, Over the crystal pond in the hollow, — Dipping, curving, and balancing, Down to the end of the course, and then Winging and swinging back again! Ho, we’re off for the pond in the hollow, Who will follow? Three women drove into an estate at Liverpool, Australia, not long ago, and they had scarcely entered when a great bull charged straight at the car. Just then the motor stalled, and as the women were afraid to get out of the car to start the engine, they sat there for six hours while the bull kept watch
