Mária V. Kápolnás: The first photographers and studios This profession requires excellent technical knowledge and practice. Lajos Adler was the first to take up this profession, he worked in the 1870s and 80s. Thanks to his photographs we are able to familiarize ourselves with the former leaders of the city and with their relatives. It was common to see traveling photographers in Szekszárd. The summer was favorable to the temporary photo-tents, where the pictures were taken in the gardens or in front of a painted background. From the 1890s, photographers such as Gyula Futter, J. Szigeti, J. Árva and others using different techniques worked in Szekszárd. In 1910, Ede Borgula started to work and thanks to his individual style and strong advertisement, he quickly ousted his competitors from the market. The studio and the name 'Borgula' became a trademark in Szekszárd and Tolna County. However, studio established by Frigyes Nőger in 1920 proved to be a tough challenge for the Borgula family. Fortunately, the city was big enough to support both studios and as a result of their rivalry a number of beautiful pictures were passed to the posterity. Dr. Gyula Dobos: Famous citizens of Szekszárd The essay is about those citizens who played an important role in the life of Szekszárd during the decade after it obtained the title 'city with orderly council'. 10 out of the 54 citizens mentioned are also freemen of Szekszárd. With their achievements, they helped the settlement to develop, improved the local community or enhanced the city's reputation even if they lived somewhere else. The number and quality of the available sources rather than the importance of the person influenced how long and detailed the biographies are. The biographies based on the sited sources give insight into the lives of famous people of the examined period.
