REZÜMÉK Kaczián János: The large village of Szekszárd becoming a 'city with orderly council' in 1905 The history of Szekszárd as a market-town dates back 400 years. The town had been functioning as the county-seat for 90 years when it received the title of 'large village'. The title 'city with orderly council' would have promoted development, but Szekszárd only obtained this status 30 years later, in 1905. Among others, this fact was a drawback to Szekszárd and resulted in a slower infrastructural and industrial development compared to other major cities in Hungary. This traditional wine-growing re­gion was trying to emerge from the difficult situation by focusing on wine production. However, these ambitions were hindered by the loss of plantations in the 19 th century caused by phylloxera and the one-sided therefore very vulnerable economical structure, which was based on wine-trade. Although, Szekszárd has been a city for a hundred years, its economy -imposed by extra tax and debt- could only catch up to the rest of the country after World War I. Ernő Csekő: The role and significance ofVirilists in Szekszárd (1905-1914) The writer examines how the greatest taxpayers, the virilists influenced the life of Szekszárd, which became a 'city with or­derly council' in 1905. The study reveals their importance in the development of city life and organizations. The study which cov­ers a time period of 10 years deals with the well-to-do citizens of the city, who represent about 1% of the total number of wage­earners in Szekszárd.
