Foreword I am honoured to write the foreword of this publication that presents one of the most beautiful elements of Hungarian decorative arts the ancient art of furniture painting. The mankind is since the ancient times attracted to beauty, even archaeological excavations have shown that our ancestors tried to beautify their surroundings. The traces of Hungarian folk furniture painting can be traced back several centuries the inhabitants of the Carpathian Basin painted and decorated the surrounding objects, the furniture. The peasants’ houses in different rural areas had a variety of caskets, beds, sideboards, stands, scarf holders and other utensils that can unfortunately lately be seen only in museums. Those old, believed to be forgotten images were brought to life by camp artists who created those masterpieces. We need to look back in the past, since the heritage of our past needs to be assessed and exposed on the top shelf and be reminded of it every day. Quoting Fáy Aladár a twentieth century Hungarian painter and graphic and fine artist I wish you to leaf through this issue with such joy as the camp participants created their creations. " The decorative instinct is natural, spiritual, an old need. Its intention is beautification, combining pleasure and usefulness, appropriate extension with proportion, rate and vitality because not only the body’s needs but also the soul’s needs have to be satisfied for a pleasant life. Just like an old work song perfects the pace of work. " ivigu v.oaua Government commissioner of Zala County 9
