Őrség

„Őrség” [frontier] is one of the most characteristic historical and ethnographical parts of the Western Transdanubia. It is mainly known for the fact that its people proudly declare themselves to be the descendants of sentinels or sentries in the age following the Magyar Conquest. The name Őrség — Frontier itself is a reference to the role of border defence. Researchers’ opinions vary regarding the size of the region. Today the term “Őrség” is applied to a relatively large area, but in earlier times it only meant 18 villages/settlements listed in a document of frontier settlements dating from 1463: Ispánk, Kisrákos, Iklód, Szaknyér, Pankasz, Szatta, Gyülevész, Kerkás-kápolna, Bajánháza, Senyeháza, Dávidháza, Kotormány, Kerca, Szomoróc, Bükallya, Kapornak, Hodos, Szalafő,
