Tokrat se približujem jeziku z vidika rabe, komunikacije in konteksta. Pravzaprav ni gra­matika, in niti ni besedni zaklad, temveč je raba jezika tisti dejavnik, v katerem se najbolj neposredno izraža raztezanje jezika in mišljenja v smer problematike načina življenja in svetovnega nazora. THE PRAGMATIC FUNCTION OF CODE-SWITCHING IN LANGUAGES Living in an ethnic minority group I posses a specific attitude to language, which by its nature is also bicultural. My language shares all characteristics that arise from my bilingualism, and it also shows the subtle details which result in a particular “bilingual” culture. The question often occurs as to what extent a bilingual person has to posses the two languages. Whether “real” bilingualism coincides with the knowledge of the two languages on the level of the mother tongue, or it rather means to speak the two languages “perfectly”? What are the cultural differences in the usage of the two languages? It is also frequently asked how we should use the language, how we should live in the language, and in the meantime what social interactions are created. The present survey aims to answer the above questions. Illustrated by concrete examples, it reveals the dimensions of the usage of the two languages, with an emphasis on the pragmatic role of “code-switching”. When studying the language we focus on usage, communication and context. The influence on the general thinking, lifestyle and ideology shows up most directly through the usage of the language, and in fact not through grammar or vocabulary. 67
