LADIES AND GENTLEMAN! FELLOW WORKERS, AND DEAR GUESTS! Here with I wish to officially open the Vth Congress of the Hungarian Freedomfighters. For this historic occasion let us ask the Great God of the Hungarians, our Hadúr, to put his blessings on the works and the intentions of these following days! Let us stand and state our beliefs: I BELIEVE IN ONE GOD! I BELIEVE IN ONE MOTHERLAND! I BELIEVE IN ONE GODLY TRUTH! I BELIEVE IN THE RESSURECTION OF GREAT HUNGARY! I DO SO BELIEVE!—I SHALL SO ACT! A MÉN! * * * DEAR MAGYAR BROTHERS AND SISTERS! It is the Sth time now that the Hungarian Freedomfighter Movement organized the Congress of the Hungarian Freedomfighters but this year is also the 25th Commemoration of the Glorious Revolution of October 23, 1956—the victorious Hungarian National Freedomfight. The Vth Congress of the Hungarian Freedomfighters was organized with such zeal and with such dedication that it shall become one of the most important mile stones in the aims and objectives of the Hungarian Freedomfighters Movement! Let us start to erect this important mile-stone so it may stand as a guide for all Magyars on the rugged and often shaky road of emigrant life. Let us erect This mile stone on a broad foundation so that no rapidly turning political winds, no emotion-charged religious and civil wars, nor the pendulum of economic storms or the shifting sands of alien sociological conditions may be strong enough to shake out of its position. Let us engrave ;deeply into this “Vth Milestone” via the words of our distinguished speakers that we know where we come from, where we are, and where we are marching—what results and victories have we achieved but also what and how many dissappointments we have endured. Without hesitation, let us engrave into this Commemorative Milestone also our dreams, plans, and our intended actions. Let the Vth Congress of the Hungarian Freedomfighters and the ongoing revolutionary programs of the Hungarian Freedomfighter Movement be the material substance of this milestone that will show the direction on the road ahead: to the future: to the glorious Hungarian Resurrection! Our aims and the fundamental ideology of our revolutionary deeds continueously stand on the original base of National Hungarian Heritage. Our love for our Motherland, our desire to serve the needs of our dear country remain without a hint of the slightest alteration the building blocks of the blood that fills our veins and colors the milestone. Let the burning desire to liberate our Great Hungary, and the sooner the better!, be the life-giving force in every drop of our blood, in every beat of our hearts as it has been for the past 25 years for the members of the Revolutionary Council of the Hungarian Freedomfighter Movement. The same burning desire to liberate our Great Hungary and to bring her independence fueled and enflamed the Magyar People of 1956. Many of us here are the eyewitnesses, the participants but most importantly the inheritors of those revolutionary times and objectives. Let that same desire be an objective of the new milestone that we erect in the following two days! The historical deeds, facts and figures of 1956 should not be altered. As the ancient rocks of the Carpathian Mountains soaked up all the rumblings and sounds of the Freedomfight of 1956 so shall the new milestone echo the vibrations of national liberation. Each mouthful of Hungarian bread that is baked of the grain that grew out of the blood-soiled Magyar earth of 1956 reminds our taste buds that that bread is holy and dear. The milestone, our Vth Congress, forever will remind us of our Hungarian soil which gave us life.—In this soil the substance of life grew for which the Hungarian peasant, the Hungarian worker and intelligentsia labored, struggled, and died. That bread, that holy body of the Sacred Magyar Motherland when robbed out of the mouths of the Hungarian children is equal to grave robbery, an antihuman act—an international crime. Hungarians always fought only for their own, and never aimed to grab that which belonged to others. Hungarians never condoned imperialistic intentions in their own ranks and will not tolerate it nor accept it from their neighbours. Especially not these days when foreign imperialism engulfed the ancient Magyar land and with gluttonish hunger proceeds to digest it! —Let this milestone stand as a reminder that the borders around the Carpathian Basin are sacred and eternal! The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 counts as one of the lastest of many wonderous Hungarian Wars of National Liberation! The Vth Congress of the Hungarian Freedomfighters, as it has been organized by the Hungarian Freedomfighters Movement aims to reflect upon that historical miracle of the second half of this 20th Century as well as to give tally of the past 25 years. Therefore, we ask our dear guests that they might receive the speakers with due respect. Let us listen to their messages. Let us evaluate and examine their opinions and let us share our views and understanding with them as each delivery will be followed by a few minutes of question and answer period. I wish you all strength and good health in the days to follow, Prof. A. S. Paposi-Jobb President of HFFM. THE OUTBRAKE OF THE ARMED UPRISING OF 1956 march to show our support of the new Polish government in their confrontation with the Soviet Union. Weiwere to meet at 2:00 P.M. in the Károlyi Kert (Károlyi-Garden) just across from the University. We got tricolor (red, white and green) ribbons to wear on our lapels or as armbands. After about an hour of hesitation over a parade permit we assembled and passing by the University Library and Church we walked across Kossuth Street and to the statue of Petőfi. There was only one event. Sinkovics, the actor, stood on the pedestal of Petőfi’s statue and recited Petőfi s famous poem: “Rise, Hungarian. ” Sinkovics was facing me. When he got to the refrain of the poem that: “We swear to the God of Hungary we will not be slaves again” I raised my hand and after some hesitation others followed and the recital became thunder. This was the first public expression of the Spirit of 1956. After the recital I was afraid to be with my classmates and joined the art students from the Art Academy who were much more spirited and marched passing by the Városháza to the Bajcs-Zsilinszky Boulevard. They carried in their hands hand painted plackards displaying the age old Coat of Arms of Hungary complete with the traditional dubled cross, the Holy Crown of St. Stephen and the three colors. To my surprise the police were rather cooperative and helped the demonstrators along. Windows opened and Hungarian national ßags were exhibited. The first chanting took place at Petőfi Square: “Nem állunk meg fél úton, Sztálinizmus pusztuljon!” (“We will not stop halfway, Let Stalinism decay!”) By the Margaret Bridge the crowd gained courage and chanted: Dr. LÁSZLÓ GUTAY Department of Physics Purdue University W. Lafayette, Indiana It is a well known Hungarian proverb that Piatnyik makes only the cards. Similarly, history gives only the chance to become a key figure to shape great historical events. Trusting in the judgment of László Cs. Szabó of the B.B.C., I thought that the events of 1953 — 1955 reflected the internal power struggle of the Hungarian communists. Thus, it was of no interest to an ardent Hungarian nationalist like myself. However, around 10:00 A.M. 23 October 1956, a Tuesday, we were informed by students that instead of the scheduled recitation, the whole student body of the Eötvös University would have a meeting in the auditorium named Gólyavár (Stork-fort). There, one of the lecturers Szamosi, read points of a manifesto, the highlight of which was the removal of the Soviet troops from Hungary. This brought the whole school to its feet and applause. The meeting adjourned with the motion that Eötvös University would participate in a peaceful
