Page 2 FIGHTER OCTOBER 1981 clearly knew why: the Hungarian Revolution was condemned to die and with it the hopes and trust of many millions of the world’s dedicated anti-communists perished with them and also the faith in the U.S.A. Senator Thomas Dodd (D-Connecticut), a former vice-chairman of the Internal Security Subcommittee and FBI man told in Los Angeles. Cal. on Aug. 28, 1961 that: "There is a developing mood of anger and frustration in this country and there ought to be for we are losing round after round in the Cold War, and our people do not like it....we have suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of international Communism. We have retreated from position after position and committed folly after folly.'' The Senator further explained that this is why Hungary had to suffer five years earlier. Nobody can say whether, had all this been done, the Soviets would have dared to slaughter Hungary anyway, right under the eyes of the U.N. observers. But had they done so the U.N. could have continued to recognize Miss Kethlv as the true representative of Hungary and denied credentials to the puppet Kadar regime. In addition to all this, the U.N. Assembly could have issued a sort of habeas corpus summons demanding that Russia produce the kidnaped Imre Nagy as the legitimate head of Hungary’s government. What actually happened was this: At 6 p.m. on Nov. 3, Ambassador Lodge insisted on postponing action on Hungary for 48 hours to allow Soviet-Hungarian "negotiations” to proceed. Yet it was already known that thousands of Soviet troops were pouring into Hungary. At midnight, when the Australian delegate interrupted the discussion of Suez to demand attention to the renewed Soviet attack on Budapest, going on at that very moment, Lodge was not prepared to do anything. ...if Ambassador H.C. Lodge was “not prepared” to do anything... the acclaimed “Dean of American Newspapermen” Walter Lippmann, in over 300 newspapers accross the U.S., quickly cautioned against any aid for the Hungarian Freedomfighters. He wrote on October 26, 1956: "It is not in our interests that the movement in Eastern Europe should go so far that no accomodation with Russia is possible...In the interest of peace and freedom...we must hope for a time—not forever, but for a time—the uprising in the satellite orbit will be stabilized at Titoism.” In the meantime those who labored hard to help the cause of the Hungarian Freedom Fight were systematically discredited or even eliminated. That is what happened to the Danish diplomat at the U.N. PovI Bang Jensen, the Assistant Secretary of the U.N. Committee on Hungary. When he refused to reveal the names of those Hungarian refugees who testified against the Soviet Union he was declared insane and was dismissed from his post by U.N. Secretary Dag Hammersjkold, the self-pronounced “Socialists”... Two years later the U.N. Diplomat Jensen was found shot to death in New York ... It is HIGH TIME that the HUNGÁRIA FREEDOM FIGHTER MOVEMENT officially and formally recognize and honor the great sacrifice of the Hungarophile Danish diplomat with due respect! For this reason the Revolutionary Council of the Hungária Freedom Fighter Movement sent mailgrams to the U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and to the U.N. Ambassador of Denmark on September 30, 1981. It has seldom happened in history that a non-Hungarian has sacrificed his life for a truth that favored Hungary! fact, of course, is that the needless Suez invasion happening at the same time not only delayed action on Hungary but emboldened the Russians to intervene. That is whv President Eisenhower is right in insisting that every vestige of this aggression be erased. Only by so doing can the free world regain the moral right and strength to act effectively in any new satellite revolt, which could occur at any hour. Fortunately Britain and France, by correctly yielding to the U.N.’s demands for withdrawal, have gone a long way toward restoring the Western moral unity that will be necessary. The President must also be prepared to act and lead, and his U.N. ambassador must not again be found without guidance or instructions. Certain preparations could be made right now to anticipate the next such crisis. A permanent U.N. observation force could be set up under the direct control of the secretary general, equipped with its own transport aircraft and communications system. The “suez invasion” then, just as the endless “Middle East crises” in the past 25 years, proved to be the real issues to do something about and the U.N. faced numerous crucial showdowns but never in behalf of Hungary nor “to protect men who have clawed their way to freedom with their bare hands”... Even four days later, for lack of a coherent plan of action, the Kadar delegates were seated. Miss Kethly, the only member of the legitimate Nagy government still free, was not even permitted to address the Assembly. At a time when the numerous ambassadors already in Budapest could have been made U.N. observers, weeks were frittered away in vain attempts to get in. The whole record is a sorry one, for the U.S. and the U.N. alike. The most terrible cial showdowns on the defiance by Israel, an issue which the President says involves the future of the U.N. itself. But that future can be genuinely secured only if the lessons of the past are not ignored. Gaining Israel’s compliance with the U.N.'s orders will, indeed, enhance the U.N.’s moral force. But that force will quickly evaporate if ever again the U.N. proves helpless to protect men who have clawed their way to freedom with their bare hands. Today there is a New Hungary! It was rebuilt on the corpses of the dead heroes of the 1956 Freedomfight by the blood and sweat of the “Wheat-bomb” While the USA crop production of 1981 is the largest ever —once again the Soviet agronomy has failed badly. According to the CBS news reports this years’ crop failure in the home of socialism was worse than the one in 1977 —probably the worst ever. But because the USSR enjoys a “most favorite nation status” the USA pledged to sell 18 million metric tons of wheat to help out the Soviet economy. This sale will be double of any previous sales of crops in one year and it makes the USA the largest wheat supplier for the Soviet Union. A politican once expressed that the USA does not need to worry about her nuclear arsenal for her wheat crop supplies are worth more in the political arena than all the bombs put together. A couple of years’ of refusal to feed the Soviet Red Army by the American grains would shake up the Soviet economy worse than any bombs could do. But again —the US did not decide to “blow up the wheat bomb this year”__ Mén-Apó ISRAEL SUPPORTERS gather in Neu York to hear Eisenhower talk, They raise monev for Israel bv selling its Lunds anti were critical of his speech, joked that "Israel should apply for eijnal time.” Rabbi Isaac Freilich (foreground) quoted psalm: "It. is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in a man.” diligent Magyar workers, peasants and intelligentsia. However, time has taken its toll and the monument is crumbling. Water from below the ground is seeping up under the natural rock foundation and wearing it away. Years ago a French artist tried to correct some of the damage by applying concrete to slow the deterioration. Oh, well! Only nothing lasts forever!
