143. évfolyam (2006) Supplementum I. The cytometric bead array: a new method for the measurement of IL-8 and VEGF in the vitreous body Richard Maier,1 Martin Weger,1 Eva-Maria Haller-Schober,1 Reingard Aigner,2 Georg Mossböck,1 Yosuf El-Shabrawi,1 Anton EIaas1 1Medical University of Graz: Department of Ophthalmology 2Medical University of Graz: Division of Nuclear Medicine Background and purpose: to investigate the cytometric bead array (СВА) technology in comparison to the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method for measuring IL-8 and VEGF in the vitreous fluid and serum in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. The advantages of the CBA technology are the need for much smaller sample volumes, as well as the possibility of measuring various other parameters in parallel. The objective of this study was to measure IL-8 and VEGF levels in vitreous fluid using established ELISA assays, and to compare these data to those obtained by CBA applied to flow cytometry. This pilot study was performed to implement and assess CBA technology in the quantification of IL-8 and VEGF levels in the vitreous fluid. Methods: Using both ELISA and CBA assays, we measured the concentration of IL-8 and VEGF in vitreous and serum samples obtained from 26 patients (13 diabetic and 13 non-diabetic) undergoing pars plana vitrectomy. For all the patients the indications for vitrectomy were epiretinal gliosis and macular hole. Results: The measurements of IL-8 and VEGF levels by the ELISA and CBA methods were highly correlated in serum and vitreous fluid. IL-8 and VEGF levels were significantly increased in the vitreous of diabetic patients compared to non-diabetics. No significant correlation between vitreous and serum levels of IL-8 and VEGF was found in either diabetics or control individuals. Conclusions: IL-8 and VEGF levels followed similar patterns, although absolute concentrations differed between the two methods. ELISA and CBA values appear to be comparable. Diabetic patients showed significant elevation of IL-8 and VEGF in the vitreous fluid. CBA technology is a new and satisfactory method for measuring IL-8 and VEGF levels in the vitreous fluid. Spinális érzéstelenítés után észlelt n. abducens paresis - esetismertetés Maka Erika Semmelweis Egyetem, Szemészeti Osztály, Budapest A 47 éves nőbetegnél spinális érzéstelenítésben végzett bal láb varixműtéte után 24 órával jelentkezett fejfájással, hányingerrel járó posztspinális szindróma. 3 nappal a beavatkozás után a beteg kettőslátást tapasztalt. A kettősképvizsgálat kétoldali, jobboldali túlsúlyú n. abducens gyengeségre jellemző eltérést igazolt. VI. nerve paresis after spinal anaesthesia: Case report Erika Мака Semmelweis University, Budapest, Department of Ophthalmology Postspinal syndrome (headache, nausea) developed in a 47-year-old woman after spinal anaesthesia for an operation on her left lower limb. The patient complained of diplopia on the third postoperative day. The Hess test showed underaction of the lateral rectus muscles on both sides, but more pronounced on the right side. Cranial
