Szemészet 208 11-12 April: joint meeting (Balatonvilágos); VII. Congress of the Society of Hungarian Paediatricians and Strabologists; XII. Symposium of the Contact-Lens Society of Hungarian Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. 27- 29 May: SHIOL congress (Keszthely). 28- 30 August: Congress of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society (Budapest). 11-13 September: joint congress (Sopron); European Vitreoretinal Society, International Society of Ocular Trauma. At the Society’s annual congress of 2003, held in Budapest, live video relays of surgical operations in progress were shown. The surgeries were taking place at the 1st Department of Ophthalmology and at the “Optimum Laser Centre”, Budapest. At the Congress there were special sessions dealing with refractive surgery, cataract surgery, retina problems, glaucoma, contactology, and paediatric ophthalmology. The congress also hosted a symposium sponsored by the pharmaceutical company MSD. The first issue of “Szemészet” for 2003 congratulated Professor Margit Varga on her 80th birthday. Issue no. 2, congratulating Professor Bálint Kovács on his 60th birthday, contained 16 articles dedicated to him. Issue no. 4 contains accounts of several congresses, a congress calendar for 2004, book reviews, and details of competitive scholarships. The Society membership in December 2003 comprised 784 women doctors and 237 men. However the most outstanding and memorable event of 2004, as we confidently expect, will be the Society’s centenary congress from 3-5 June, with participation of Hungarian and foreign guests. This is the Society which was founded in 1904 by a meeting of 30 Hungarian ophthalmologists, and which in 2003 counted 1021 members.
