141. évfolyam (2004) 221- Humalac A,B,C eye-drops (1983); - Humatimolol 0.25% and 0.5% eye-drops (1993); and- Polysporin eye- and ear-drops (2004). At the beginning of the 1980s the Hungarian healthcare system had a serious problem with the large amount of foreign exchange required for imported medicines. To solve this difficulty, the Human Institute contracted with various foreign companies to manufacture pharmaceutical products under licence. Thus we were able to put the following products on the market:- Timoptic 0.25% and 0.5% eye-drops, from MSD (1984);- the Novo-Nordisk insulin preparation (1988); and- the Eli-Lilly insulin preparation (1992). The political and economic changes after 1989 resulted in major changes in the life of the Human Institute as well. The Institute was in 1992 transformed into a private company; the first majority owner was the Hungarian state. In 1995 a Canadian company, Novopharm Ltd., became the majority owner. On 1 April 2000 Novopharm was purchased by TEVA Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and thus the latter company became the owner of Human Ltd., as it by then was. After overcoming some transitional problems connected with the privatisation process, Human Ltd., as a member of the TEVA group, is in a position to continue as a high quality supplier to the Hungarian healthcare system, especially in the field of ophthalmic medications.
