141. évfolyam (2004) 203 In 1988 the Eye-Injury Register of the USA was established. In the same year the Hungarian Register was set up, and was able to provide valuable data (Kuhn and colleagues). From 14-15 April 1989 the European Glaucoma Society held its congress in Budapest. The organiser was Piroska Follmann. In the autumn the Society held a peripatetic meeting in Szeged. This was preceded, on 31 August, by an electoral meeting. The officers were: President, Ildikó Süveges; Vice-presidents, Béla Alberth and Attila Medgyaszai; General Secretary, György Salacz; Treasurer, Júlia Bogi; Minutes Secretary, Andrea Kerek. New life-memberships were awarded to Ibolya Pápay, László Remenár, István Takáts, and László Valu. The new editor of “Szemészet” was Piroska Follmann. In 1989 the first article on the treatment of intraocular melanomas using ruthenium irradiation by the contact technique was published by Alberth and Berta. Also in this year the first article on the treatment of endophthalmitis by vitrectomy was published by Zajácz and Boros. In this year Magda Radnót died at the age of 78. She was born in 1911. Her obituary in “Szemészet” was written by her successor, Margit Varga. Radnót had published 300 articles and 9 books. In 1950 she was for one year director of the Szeged eye clinic, and from 1951 to her retirement in 1980 she was director of the 1st Department of Ophthalmology in Budapest. From 1960 to 1972 she was Vice-Rector of the Semmelweis Medical University. In 1976 she became a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and later a member of the Academy’s directorial board. From 1968 to 1980 she was head of the National Institute of Ophthalmology. She was elected as a member or honorary member of several ophthalmological and medical professional societies, and received several Hungarian and foreign awards of recognition. In 1990 the 85th birthday of Imre Bíró was celebrated. From 1990 onwards, articles in “Szemészet” were published with an abstract in English as well as Hungarian; some articles were henceforth published in German and in English. In 1990 a university textbook titled “Ophthalmology” by Béla Alberth was published. It has subsequently been reissued in a total of 3 editions. In the same year András Berta spent a year as Visiting Professor at the Lubbock Dry Eye Institute in the USA. On 17 May 1990 the contact lens society of Hungarian ophthalmologists was founded. The honorary president was István Győrffy, President, Mihály Végh; Vice-President Agnes Nádray; Secretaries, Anna Bujdosó and Márta Késsey. In the same year the László Batthyány-Strattmann award was founded. This year’s peripatetic meeting was held on 24-25 August in Kecskemét. It was organised by Miklós Oláh. The keynote topic was ultrasound diagnostics and biometry for IOL selection. The scientific programme was organised by János Németh from the Szeged eye-clinic. 1991-1995 Ildikó Süveges, President of the Society, proposed that “Szemészet” should appear in a new external format, to conform with European standards. With regard to the contents, she wished to see more articles of wide-ranging scientific scope. Accordingly in the first issue of 1991 there were several review articles, one of them by György Imre titled “On the mechanism of neovascularisation”. Berta and colleagues reported on their experience with the treatment of intraocular tumours by ruthenium irradiation. In accordance with the President’s new plan, full-colour illustrations could now accompany the articles. An account by János Németh of the 1990 International Ultrasound Congress, organised by the South-Hungary branch of the Society, appeared in the same issue. Béla Alberth was elected an honorary member of the Federal German Ophthalmology Society (DOG), Ildikó Süveges of the Ophthalmological Society of the German Democratic Republic, and Margit Varga of the Italian Ophthalmological Society. The 1990 winners of the Papolczy scholarships were Gábor Holló, Agnes Szabó, János Németh, Éva Szabó, and László Nébenführer, Miklós Kiss (gynaecologists). In 1991 the subject for the Olga Palich-Szántó scholarship was “Ophthalmic symptoms of neurological diseases treated in the ophthalmology clinic”. Unfortunately however I have no information on the scholarship recipients. Several congresses and further-training courses were held. The 1991 annual meeting, held jointly with the Belgian Ophthalmology Society, took place from 21-25 August in Budapest. On 5 April 1991 the eye-clinic of the Szeged medical school held a conference on cornea-related problems, which was attended by foreign participants. On 4 May the eye-clinic of the Debrecen medical school held a one-day further-training course, also with foreign participants. The International Retinal Workshop held its session in Pécs from 30-31 August. The eye-clinic of the Debrecen medical school announced 4 courses on 4 different subjects. These lasted for 10 days. The Postgraduate School of Medicine (OTE) increased the number of its further-training courses. The courses covered various subjects. The compulsory courses during the year lasted in all for 7 days; in addition there was a special course which lasted for 5 days. Further-training conferences were held on 4 occasions (a total of 9 days). The fee for the two latter was 1000 Forints per day. István Győrffy celebrated his 80th birthday in 1991. In May, the London-based European Contact-Lens Society accepted the affiliation of the Hungarian society; this was the first such affiliation from the former “eastern bloc”. 100 YEARS OF THE HUNGARIAN OPHTHALMOLOGICAL SOCIETY
