Átfogó tanulmány híján a lézer kezelés indikációjának felállításakor a zónáktól függetlenül a Cryo ROP Study ajánlásait veszik figyelembe. Egyes szerzők közleményében a leírt kritériumoknak megfelelően végzett kezelés után valamennyi szemben visszafejlődött a retinopathia [16]. Mások változó arányban (I 1-27%) írják le a betegség progresszióját [3, 11, 13, 15 17], Elsősorban dióda lézerrel szerzett tapasztalatok alapján úgy tartják, hogy a zóna 2 retinopathiák kezelésében a cryopexia, illetve a lézer koaguláció egyformán jó, zóna 1 esetében pedig mindenképp hatékonyabb [3, 11, 18], Akik a dióda és argon lézer koagulációt hasonlították össze, a két módszert egyenértékűnek találták [17],

A zóna 1 retinopathiák kezelésének indikációjáról megoszlanak a vélemények [3]. Fleming és mtsai - figyelembe véve a zóna I retinopathiák igen rossz prognózisát - eleve megváltoztatták zóna l-ben a küszöb retinopathia definícióját, s már korábban elvégezték a koagulálást |8|. Mivel lézer koaguláció után valamennyi zónában lényegesen ritkábban fordul elő maradandó szövődmény, a cryopexiáról a lézer koagulációra való áttérés eredményesebbé teheti a retinopathia praematurorum kezelését.
