In 15 patients with keratotonus X-ray examinations of the vertebral column and the knee joint have been performed by the authors in order to clear, whether articular or chondral disease is present in these patients. Previously the complication of the dystrophic and degenerative diseases of the cornea with diseases of the intervertebral disk or the cartilage, resp., has been observed by the authors and in their opinion, this was due to the disturbance of the mucopolysaccharide metabolism of the organism. The performed examinations have shown in all cases spondylosis, in 11 cases osteoporosis and in 9 cases knee arthrosis—in these cases the relationship between the disease of the cornea and the cartilage was evident—therefore it may be presumed with great probability that also the keratoconus belongs to the group of diseases called keratochondrosis.

The surprisingly frequent osteoporosis is probably a consequence of the somewhat decreased quantity of chondroitin-sulphate in the bones.

Die Röntgenuntersuchung der Wirbelsäule und des Kniegelenks von 15 Patienten mit Keratokonus wurde durchgeführt um zu klären, ob bei ihnen eine Gelenk- bzw. Knorpelkrankheit vorhanden ist. Vorangehend wurde in mehreren Fällen die Komplikation der dystrophischen und degenerativen Krankheiten der Kornea mit Knorpelscheiben- bzw. Knorpelkrankheit nachgewiesen, und dies wurde einer Störung des Mukopolysaccharidhaushalts des Organismus zugeschrieben. Die durchgeführten Untersuchungen zeigten in jedem Falle Spondylose, in 11 Fällen Osteoporose und in 9 Fällen Kniearthrose; in diesen Fällen ist der Zusammenhang der Kornea und der Knorpelkrankheit zweifellos und deswegen ist auch der Keratokonus wahrscheinlich ein Mitglied der mit Keratochondrosen bezeichneten Krankheitsgruppe. Die auffallend häufige Osteoporose ist annehmbar eine Folge des verminderten Chondroitinsulfatgehalts in den Knochen.
