By the present time, remote results of observation (from 6 months to 6 years) have shown that visual acuity remained unchanged or even increased in these patients, and only in 5 of them it reduced due to formation of retroprosthesis membrane. In 5 patients the overgrowth of corneal epithelium or scar tissue was recorded which had to be periodically removed. Good or satisfactory fixation of keratoprosthesis remains in most of the patients. But in 8 patients the implant had to be fixed; in 4 of them the implant was removed after unsuccessful attempts to held it in place. These were eyes with sharply thinned corneas which previously had underwent multiple operations. We shall try to illustrate all said above by examples.

Patient X., aged 46 years, was treated at the Institute on occasion of total vascularized leucoma of the cornea in both eyes (Fig. 1). Leucoma formed in 1953 after burn of the eye with sulfuric acid. In 1967, total lamellar cornal transplantation was performed in the right eye; the graft opacified and vascularized abundantly; visual acuity in both eyes was light perception with correct projection.

In October 24, 1969, alloplasty of leucoma was performed. Visual acuity after operation measured 0.3; thin irregular retroprosthesis membrane is present. In June, 1970, fixation of the cornea and of the implant with mucous membrane from the mouth cavity was made because extrusion of the graft was threatening. A year later, in connection with lens opacification and sharp fall in vision, cataract extraction and removal of retroprosthesis membrane were made. Visual acuity in the right eye was 1.0 after extraction of the opacified lens, fixation of the implant is good. The follow-up period is more than 5 years.
