Wiesner : Biochemical alterations of lenses in the Loewe syndrome The authors present the case of a young boy with Loewe syndrome. The symptoms: binocular cataract, nystagmus, bodily, statical and, mental backwardness, areflexia and hyporeflexia, general muscular hypotony, an increased spastic susceptibility, albuminuria, hyperaminoaciduria, non-respiratory, non-compensated acidosis with reduction of the standard bicarbonate, hypalbuminaemia. Cataract extraction was followed by the hystological examination of the lenses, as well as of the free aminoacids and lipids of the lenses with chromatography, and of the albumens with electrophoresis. A diminution and disappearance of gangliosides and of phospholipids were established, instead of the lens proteins albuminoids and peptids were found. L. Galli, Z. V a s s und К. Wiesner : Biochemische Veränderungen in den Linsen im Falle des Loewe-Syndroms Der Fall eines Knaben mit Loewe-Syndrom wird beschrieben. Die Symptome waren binokulare Katarakte, Nystagmus, körperliches, statisches und geistiges Zurückbleiben, Areflexie und Hyporeflexie, allgemeine Muskelhypotonie, gesteigerte Krampfbereitschaft, Albuminurie, Hyperaminoaeidurie, nicht respiratorische, nicht kompensierte Acidose mit Verminderung des Standardbicarbonats, Hypalbuminämie. Nach der Staroperation wurden ausser der histologischen Untersuchung der Linsen die freien Aminosäuren und die Lipide der Linsen mit Chromatographie untersucht, ihre Eiweisskörper mit Elektrophorese. Verminderung und Verschwinden der Ganglioside und der Phospholipide war festzustellen, statt der Linseneiweisskörper wurden Albuminoide und Peptide gefunden. 111
