The Documentation of the Built Heritage of Szeklerland (1996-2004)

(Abstract)

In 1996, as a result of a Hungarian - German — Romanian application, the European Committee provided financial support to the inventory program of the documentation of the architectural heritage in the settlements inhabited by Hungarians. The actuation of the research program was realized thanks to this subsidy.

At first, from 1997, in nineteen settlements of a small region of Szeklerland (called Erdővidék), then in 1998 and 1999, in forty-four settlements of another territory — in the valley of Nyárád - the collecting of the data, the photographing and the survey of the local architectural heritage and of the movable heritage of the churches were completed.

During the local fieldwork, it became clear that there were many significant monuments that had been forgotten, so they hadn’t been recorded in the Carpathian Basin. Thus, these irreplaceable values can be ruined without ever having come to light.

The inventory of the values and the documentation of the heritage have a strategic significance, which are firstly the base of the country planning and developments. However, the utilization of the completed inventory of the architectural values of the settlements is doubtful in Transylvania. But, in spite of this, comprehensive inventories of the built and cultural heritage are necessary for the maintenance of the heritage, and required in the drawing up of the development plans.
