TANULMÁNYOK A SZÉKELYSÉG KÖZÉPKORI ÉS FEJEDELEMSÉG KORI TÖRTÉNELMÉBŐL Searching the Presence of Szeklers in Burgenland — The Examination of Landscape. Elements Referring to Former Szekler Presence in „in der Wart”, Austria (Abstract) In my work I have tried to identify some landscape elements with regard to former Szekler presence in some of the settlements of the region „in der Wart” in Burgenland, Austria. I have studied villages with regard to the landscape, settlement structure, plot arrangement and architecture. In the case of Alsóőr (Unterwart) I found several signs of the former Szekler presence, though assimilation and globalization certainly have had an increasing impact on the village. Although Orisziget (Siget in der Wart) is known as a remote area where traditions are extremly strong, I couldn’t find any landscape elements that could be referred to as characteristically Szekler, they are rather Hungarian. Németciklény (Eisenzicken) was a control sample, because this settlement originally founded by Szeklers/Hungarians was depopulated in the 15th century, and the new population was already speaking German. Vasvörösvár (Rotenturm an der Pinka) ha s been the settlement most transformed by global impacts in the last decades. 249
