Visy Zsolt: Régi sándok a székely hagyományban

Visy Zsolt RÉGI SÁNCOK A SZÉKELY HAGYOMÁNYBAN Earthworks in the Szekler Tradition (Abstract) Lots of earth fortifications are known in the Szeklerland (Secuime/Székelyföld), in the south-east corner of Transylvania, Romania. The traditions and culture of this Hungarian population were collected and published in the 6 volume standard work of Balázs Orbán in the middle of the 19th century. Although lots of scientific investigations and archaeological explorations have been made on these remarkable ensemble, the exact extension, the proper connections, the date and structure of these earthworks could not be completely clarified. The present study intends to provide contribution to these investigations, focusing on their denomination, the origin of the names and their distribution and occurrence in the Hungarian tradition in the Carpathian Basin. Taking notice of the earlier statements the paper classifies the legendary names as generally used in the whole Carpathian Basin and the characteristic Szekler names. It also points out that the generally occurring name beginning with Leány-/Virgin- can be related to fairies and not to a female heir of a family. 230
