FÓTI MIKLÓS IN THE SERVICE OF TWO BORDERLANDS The Career of San Ali Bey in Ottoman Hungary and in the Caucasus By Miklós Fóti SUMMARY San Ali bey was governor of several Hungarian subprovinces of the Ottoman Empire in the 1560s and 1570s, primarily known as a long-serving bey of Szigetvár. The main steps of his career can be followed with the help of Turkish defters (tevcih defterleri and mühimme defterleri). As a punishment for various financial and administrative abuses he was transferred to the Balkans, then obliged to participate in the Ottoman-Safavid wars in the Caucasus, accompanied by his son, Arslan bey, who was himself governor of several provinces. Their role in the Persian wars can be traced through the accounts of the chronicles, where Ali was mentioned with different distinctive names, such as Potur/Moravi/Bosnavi Ali pa§a. The study presents a new source on Arslan bey - his appointment to the sanjak of Koppány - which made possible to reconstruct the deeds and merits of both Arslan and his father in the eastern wars. 164
