E néhány példa is mutatja, hogy nem egyedülállóan magyar módszer volt a művészek alkotásainak utánzása, azonban ezek színvonala, gyakorisága ebben a régióban már annak tekinthető. Az pedig — ha nem is kizárólagosan — magyar jellemzőnek tekinthető, hogy igyekeztek nem csupán klasszikus, hanem kortárs festményeket is népszerűsíteni, jól ismert alkotásokat újragondolni.

SUMMARY

The paper examines those works of the fine arts that were reinterpreted in the Hungarian (and, passingly, in other Central European) satirical journals and the ways in which these reinterpretations were made. The inquiry analyses the caricatures prepared on the basis of paintings and illustrations made by international artists, focussing on four Hungarian journals between 1890 and 1910. The caricatures interpret actual political events, and while their figures are generally not connected to the central figure of the original work, the message of the original work does add to the layers of the meaning of the caricature. It can be observed that most of the the painting-reinterpretations are related to the theme of hope, defeat-failure and destruction-death, so it is in terms of these topical units that the paper analyses the caricatures. Byway of comparison it concludes that while the imitation of artistic works was not an exclusively Hungarian method, the great number and high quality of such works in Hungary is outstanding.
