THE FOUNDATION OF THE COLLEGIATE CHAPTER OF SAINT LADISLAUS AT VÁRAD

SUMMARY

The paper explores the foundation time of the collegiate chapter that was known by the double name of the „new college of King Ladislaus the Saint’s Tomb and the church of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr”, on the basis of its known provosts and the statutes issued by Domokos

Kálmáncsehi, bishop

of Várad.

Scholarship

has so far unanimously attributed the foundation of the new institution to the bishop of Várad,

who

would have established it by transforming the Premonstratensian convent that had previously existed at Váradelőhegy

and

enlarging its competences. Yet the surviving examples of the collegiate chapter’s statutes have maintained two different versions, with a chronological difference that has so far remained unremarked: one can be dated to the summer of 1501, and the other to 15 December 1508. While the former was indeed made in the time of bishop Kálmáncsehi,

the

latter was already confirmed by bishop Zsigmond Turzó.

two texts are published in the Appendix.) Having analysed the problem of the foundation time, the author concludes that the collegiate chapter was in fact established by one of the prelates of Várad

much

earlier than so far supposed.
