JEHOVA’S WITNESSES AND ARROW-CROSS TERROR IN WESTERN TRANSDANUBIA Individual Destinies from the Internment Camp of Nagykanizsa to the Executions at Körmend By Tamás Csapody SUMMARY Due to the advance of the Soviet troops, on 2 December 1944 the internment camps of Nagykanizsa were abolished. Then, however, the frontline got stuck, and the Arrow- Cross authorities reorganised the administration. Razzias were continuous, the liberated internees were hunted down, and the levente recruits, deserters, fugitives from the forced labour and the Jews were captured. The captives were submitted to torture by electric shocks and other torments, while under the effect of martial law they faced lynching or execution. In the great barracks of Körmend some fifty executions took place, most of which are completely unknown. Among the twelve male victims there were the witnesses of Jehova, executed for treason and the refusal to enlist in the army. The executed have ever since rested in an unmarked grave in the public cemetery of Körmend. 187
