SZÁZADBAN THE HUNGARIAN NATIONAL THEATRE AND THE VARIOUS FORMS OF CHARITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY By Lilla Szalisznyó SUMMARY The study explores the charity activities of the Hungarian National Theatre in the nineteenth century. The object of the analysis has been selected on the grounds that the later National Theatre, opened as the Hungarian Theatre of Pest on 22 August 1837, was the first institution in the history of institutionalised Hungarian-language dramatics whose financial situation, especially after its maintenance had become state-supported in 1841, allowed for charitable activities.
