A BIRODALOM VONZÁSÁBAN THE ATTRACTION OF THE EMPIRE Bohemian-Hungarian-Austrian Relations between 1196 and 1214 by Veronika Rudolf SUMMARY The struggle for the German throne that started after the death of Emperor Henry VI (1197) was a long-term conflict of vital importance in the Holy Roman Empire, not only for the Empire itself but also for the whole of Europe. The choice between the two throne pretenders (Philipp of Swabia and Otto of Brunswick) could, on the one hand, affect the fate of the imperial crown, and on the other, the future of a principality. A good decision taken at the right time could secure the power and rise of a dynasty, while a bad one could cause the fall of it. Besides these chances the throne dispute gave wide latitude for the imperial princes, which manifested itself in their foreign policies. The paper analyses how this increased freedom affected the Bohemian-Hungarian, Austrian-Hungarian, and Bohemian-Austrian relations in this period, and through it tries to demonstrate why and in what ways the kings of Hungary were involved in the imperial conflict. 530
