Mi sem bizonyítja jobban, hogy a lengyelkérdés „hullámszerű” alakulása 1914 és 1918 között történelmi tény, mint az, hogy a németek 1918 végén mégiscsak „visszaadták” Lengyelországot a Monarchiának. Az osztrák—lengyel megoldás tehát a háború végén ismét aktuális programmá vált, bár az is igaz, hogy mindennek a lengyel-ügy szempontjából már nem volt valódi jelentősége. A német hátraarc ugyanis kizárólag a közelgő háborús vereségnek volt köszönhető.

SUMMARY

At the beginning of World War I the Polish question was only marginally featured on the diplomatic agenda of the Central Powers. In the first months, the German political leadership envisaged the integration of Poland in some form - trialism, independent kingdom, or province - into the Habsburg crown, were the Central Powers to win the war. However, this idea gradually changed. Partially influenced by German public opinion, and even more by pressure from industrial and financial circles, the German government inceasingly endorsed the idea of drawing the Kingdom of Poland under German control somehow. Having concealed this change of opinion for several months, the German diplomacy openly declared its claim to Poland during the negotiations at Berlin in April 1916. Although Austro-Hungarian diplomacy had no other option but to accept the German decision, the diplomatic relationship between Germany and Austria- Hungary remained glacial for several months thereafter.
