KL ANGOL HADSEREG MEGOSTROMOLJA BUDAVÁRÁT THE ENGLISH ARMY BESIEGES THE CASTLE OF BUDA The Military Encampments of Hounslow Heath during the Reign of James II (1685-1688) by Tibor Tóth SUMMARY During the reign of James II (1685-1688) the English government circles paid special attention to the Hungarian theatre of war against the Ottomans. Every year English, Scottish and Irish army officers and engineers travelled to the battlefields in Hungary in order to accumulate and gather military experience and skills. Such trips were supported by James II himself, who wanted to strengthen the English, Irish, and Scottish armies. Each summer, military exercises were held at Hounslow Heath in order to pass on the expertise brought home by the volunteers to the entire army. One of the most important military encampments took place in 1687, when a replica of the fortress of Buda was erected and the English army learned and practiced modern siege techniques by recreating the siege of 1686. 328
