B. SZABÓ JÁNOS - SUDÁR BALÁZS az ő holttesteiken át hágtak fel a város falára. A város elesett, s a kard nem nyugodott benne napokig, népét fogságba vitték. A türkök három nap múlva vonultak ki belőle, Konstantinápoly irányába. Megművelt földek, mezők és tanyák között vonultak át, miközben gyilkoltak, embereket ragadtak el és vittek fogságba. Konstantinápoly falai alá érve 40 napig táboroztak ott. Közben a nőket és a gyermekeket eladták szövetdarabokból készült ruhákért, valamint brokát- és selyemruhákért. A férfiak között azonban nagy öldöklést vittek végbe, és egyet sem hagytak élve közülük, bár néha leöldösték az asszonyokat és a gyermekeket is. Ezután kiterjesztették portyáikat ezen a vidéken. Portyázó alakulataik egészen a szlávok és a rómaiak országáig hatoltak, azóta pedig már Andalúziáig, a frankok országáig és Galíciáig is eljutnak portyáik során. Szabó - Balázs Sudár SUMMARY A rare and fairly valuable source of tenth-century military culture is the description in Al- Masudi’s Golden Fields in which he describes with unparallelled elaboration the tactical tricks based on archery that were used against the Byzantines by four peoples the author regards as Turkic. Thanks to the influential work of Joseph Marquart, this piece of information was adopted among the sources of early Hungarian history more than a century ago, as a memory of the 934 Hungarian campaign against Byzantium. Yet a detailed analysis of this source suggests that the city that stands in the centre of the events (Vlndr) should be looked for somewhere in the forefront of the Caucasus, in present-day Georgia, instead of in the Balkans, and the events described therein must have taken place somewhat later, at the end of the 930s as a side-event of the Arab-Byzantine wars. If Hungarians took part in this action, these must not have been those who had already moved to the Carpathian Basin, but the groups that remained in the East. 137
