HABSBURG IV. KÁROLY RESTAURÁCIÓS ELKÉPZELÉSEI Austria was not the successor of the Habsburg Empire. Since all three points were diametrically opposed to the future plans of the ex-emperor, the only way to end the confrontation was the departure of the ruler and the nationalisation of his assets. After Charles failed in his efforts to frame his claim to the throne as an issue of international importance, his attention turned towards the Hungarian throne. The failure of his two successive coup d’états in Hungary in 1921 was caused both by the almost complete lack of international backing, as well as the poor support enjoyed in Hungary for the Habsburg restoration. 938
