PETER SHERWOOD 385 a leghatásosabb eszközeit annak, hogyan tudja őket a lehető legszűkebb gyeplőn tartani az éhezés küszöbén, csírájában elfojtva azok gebeként is fel-felhorgadó lelkesedését. És éppen ez az, ami kifürkészhetetlen számunkra. Az angol ‘nép’ nem bízza magát olyan politikai princípiumokra, melyek óhatatlanul hajlamosak a köznép megrövidítését előmozdítani, nem fog bizalmat szavazni olyan ‘solidarity-nek’, amely rejtélyes logikai önellentmondások és következmények láncolatán át a testi elsorvadás állapotára kárhoztatja. Továbbá ennek az országnak a kékvérűi és burzsoáziája – ha mégoly magasztosnak is tűnhetik más ‘népek’ szemében – távolról sem kíván kvaterkázni amolyan hősfajtákkal, bármely nagyra is tartja azok odaadását a szabad intézmények iránt, akiket a szabadságról alkotott elképzeléseik veszélyes végletekig ragadtatnak. Mindenesetre a szót magát nyugodtan ráolthatjuk szókincsünk tőkéjére mint új jövevényt, ám éppen ellentétes értelemben azzal a jelentéssel, mellyel itt minden jel szerint felruháztatott – mint ahogy a hajótörött utazó is ujjong, ha egy akasztófára bukkan a szigeten, mert annak bizonyságát látja benne, hogy civilizált partokra vetette a víz. 17 Az OED szerint tehát Kossuth volt az első, aki használta volna az angolban a solidarity of ... szerkezetet, mégpedig a solidarity of the peoples kifejezésben, az OED szerint 1852-ben – bár fentebb már láttuk, hogy tulajdonképpen az előző 17 “There are other matters besides our criminal statistics to gossip about, and which ought not to be forgotten in a valedictory rhapsody. No one should rejoice more than we should in the ‘solidarity’ of the ‘peoples’, if ‘solidarity’ mean good feeding. We know that there is ‘solidarity’ in beef and mutton – the only description of ‘solidarity’ our ‘people’ are likely to care much about looking after in their intercourse with other ‘peoples’; but we are afraid that patriotism on the continent is of too transcendental a nature to descend to such gross considerations. It does not aim at achieving ‘solidarity’ in the way of supplying its ‘peoples’ with the means of growing lusty and strong; but, on the contrary, takes the most efficient methods of keeping them as nearly as possible to starvation point, and of cutting them off in the flower of their lean enthusiasm. Now this it is that puzzles us. The English ‘people’ have no reliance upon political principles that have an inevitable tendency to short commons; they will not put their trust in a ‘solidarity’ that threatens, by a mysterious contradiction in terms and consequences, to reduce them to a condition of physical emaciation; and however highly other ‘peoples’ may think of it, the blouses and bourgeoisie of this country are by no means inclined to fraternize with any race of heroes, be they never so grand in their devotion to free institutions, who carry their notions of freedom to that perilous extremity. The word, nevertheless, may be engrafted on our vocabulary as a new word, meaning exactly the contrary of what it apparently expresses; just as a gibbet was hailed by the shipwrecked traveller as an evidence that he has been cast upon a land of civilization.” Fraser’s Magazine 45. kötet, 1852. január. 17–32., az idézet itt: 28.
