2019 / 2. szám - TANULMÁNYOK - Jakab Réka: A pápai Neumannok. Adalékok a 19. századi családi karriertörténetek kutatásához

A PÁPAI NEUMANNOK 378 A Neumannok utolsó általunk ismert családtagja az ötödik nemzedékbe tartozó Károly volt. Katolizált, túlélte a második világháborút, és nyugalmazott egyetemi tanárként a Rákosi-korszak legsötétebb éveiben a család Benczúr utcai villájában élt, talán társbérletben. THE NEUMANNS OF PÁPA On Researching Family Careers in the Nineteenth Century By Réka Jakab SUMMARY Abraham, a descendant of the Neumann family, originated from Pápa, the town that hosted the greatest Jewish community in provincial Hungary. He established his career as a military purveyor in the early nineteenth century, and later continued as an industrial entrepreneur. By the end of the century, his descendants had established factories of their own, and acquired both noble title and estates. The career structure of the Neumanns is reconstructed through an examination of the economic activity, real estate acquisitions, local integration, marriage alliances and public role of individual family members. The paper contributes to the stream of modern Hungarian economic history that tries to construct models of nineteenth-century business histories. At the same time, by revealing the career history and social strategies of the Neumann family, it reflects on certain aspects of the typologies and models of business history which have recently been elaborated.
