AZ AGRÁRTÖRTÉNETI KUTATÁSOK MEGALAPOZóI DEBRECENBEN 48 Ha mindezek mellett figyelembe vesszük, hogy számos írása foglalkozik Nyíregyházával és Szabolcs-Szatmár megyével, akkor láthatjuk, hogy Balogh István érdeklődési köre a regionális kutatások széles spektrumát ölelte fel, életműve megkerülhetetlen a jövő agrártörténeti kutatói számára. 47 Szabó István és Balogh István, akik tudományos szintre emelték Debrecenben az agrártörténet-írást, egyben igen magasra tették a mércét is. Szabó István tanítványai igyekeztek e magas színvonalat megtartani. E sorok írója, ennek az iskolának egyetlen még élő képviselője csak reménykedni tud benne, hogy a történetírás ezen ágának forrásai nem fognak elapadni Debrecenben a következő évtizedekben sem. ISTVÁN SZABó AND ISTVÁN BALOGH: FOUNDERS OF THE HISTORY OF AGRICULTURE IN DEBRECEN by István Orosz SUMMARY István Szabó and István Balogh played a leading role in the emergence of agrarian history at Debrecen. They were both born in the city, and were the first in their respective families to receive higher education. Szabó’s stepfather, and both parents of Balogh, were farmers, a fact that must surely have played a role in raising their interest in agrarian history. They later also dealt with the history of Debrecen itself, Szabó to a considerably greater extent than Balogh. István Szabó explored several issues of agrarian history, both medieval and early modern, the most important among which were beyond doubt the analysis of the functioning of direct seigneurial management (the so-called predium) in the Árpád era, the presentation of the development of agrarian society, the analysis of Kossuth’s activities towards the abolition of seigneurial subjection, and the examination of capitalist transformation of agrarian production. As for István Balogh, he successfully combined ethnography with agrarian history, enlightened the behaviour patterns of people in Debrecen and the Hajdúság, the peculiar features of the scattered manorial world in the Great Plain of Hungary, as well as of the peasent economy on its margins. 47 Balogh István bibliográfiájában 65 Szabolcs-Szatmár megyével és Nyíregyházával kapcsolatos tétel szerepel, ezek közül 23 agrártörténeti jellegű.
