ÉVI FORRADALOM ÉS SZABADSÁGHARC A SZÁZADOK HASÁBJAIN 38 THE REVOLUTION AND WAR OF INDEPENDENCE OF 1848–1849 AS REFLECTED BY SZÁZADOK by Róbert Hermann SUMMARY The author explores the ways in which the Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-1849 has been reflected in the journal Századok over the past one and a half centuries. The topic itself first emerged there in 1886 in a book review. The first independent contribution to 1848 only appeared in the thirtieth issue in 1896. A more important representation of the topic was also hindered before 1918 by the fact that much of the relevant archival material was kept in Vienna, and was unavailable for Hungarian scholars. Yet in terms of numbers no significant change took place after 1919 either, while the period between 1948 and 1956 yielded more publications than the preceding thirty years. After 1956 decline set in again, and increase in the number of publications restarted only from the 1980s. After 1990 more publications devoted to the topic appeared in Századok than in the entire course of the 110 years before. The author also assesses critically the scholarly weight, durability and importance of the writings published in Századok.
