QUESTIONS OF LINGUISTIC AND ETHNIC RECONSTRUCTION IN THE CARPATHIAN BASIN OF THE ELEVENTH CENTURY by Hoffmann István, Tóth Valéria (Summary) The present study is directly connected to the paper that the late Gyula Kristó published in the same review in 2000 about the ethnic groups of Hungary in the age of Saint Stephen. In this work, Kristó critically assessed the methods elaborated by István Kniezsa a good half century before and the results he had reached on the very basis of these methods. At the same time, Kristó also outlined his own ideas about the ethnic structure of the Carpathian Basin in the same period. So far, the work of Kristó has elicited no reflections whatsoever on the side of linguists. The present study aims at approaching the subject from various perspectives. 1. At first, the authors examine the present state of the research with regard to general questions of name-giving and name-usage, the way these views diverge from previous scholarly opinions, and the consequences this involves in connection to the possibilities of linguistic and ethnic reconstruction. 2. They explore systematically the theses once forwarded by Kiezsa, taking into account the critical remarks of Kristó as well, and in doing so to incorporate into the analysis those perspectives which have been proposed by more recent research 3. In the next step, the propositions of Kristó are critically examined. 4. Finally, those linguistic and onomastic procedures are summarised, which, on the basis of our present knowledge, can be put to use with a view of linguistic and ethnic reconstruction.
