A SZATMÁRI VÉCSEYEK ÉS AZ ELSŐ VILÁGHÁBORÚ 1293 also on the level of national politics, they have been rather neglected by the historical research. At first the study concentrates on the sons of baron József Vécsey (1829-1902) and countess Blanka Dessewffy (1842-1917), and then on the activities of the family’s female members. Considerable attention is given to baroness Magdolna Vécsey (1873-1960), married to count István Cebrian, who actively cared for the injured, and as member of a Red Cross mission even visited prisoner camps in Russia. Thanks to the economic and mental traumas caused by the loss of the great war, the Vécseys of Szatmár, who had prospered mightily under the dual monarchy, entered a period of crisis, which demanded of them the elaboration of new life strategies.
