Archiepiscopus Strigoniensis TWO UNKNOWN LETTERS BY PÉTER PÁZMÁNY FROM 1618 by Kiss Balázs - Oláh Róbert (Summary) Research into the correspondence of Péter Pázmány has certainly not revealed all that survives so far for scientific historiography. The letters which are published here from the collections of the Primatial Archives witness to the close relationship between the archbishop and the Court of Vienna The letters he wrote to king Matthias II and imperial councillor Leonhard Meggau prove beyond any doubt that in Hungarian affairs the prelate wanted to exert a decisive influence on the policies and attitudes of the Viennese court. Comparison of these letters and of the responses coming from the court shed further light on the Habsburg political alternatives which emerged late in 1618 and early in 1619. Namely, the documents published here present, from Pázmány’s perspective, a possible political alternative which, however, was never translated into the language of practical politics.
