Szíjártó (Summary) An extensive research into archival material in Somogy county has made it possible to formulate certain hypotheses about the careers of county officials in the 18th century. By checking the results against the published archontological lists of Zala, Heves and Borsod counties, the conclusion obtained that alongside the offices of deputy noble magistrate (alszolgabíró), deputy county prosecutor and deputy notary those of the county notary and county prosecutor also provided access to the county administration, and the same applied to the office of chief noble magistrate (főszolgabíró), but only with regard to the scions of more prestigious families. For, whereas for the majority of nobles who locked into office-holding on the county level even the post of chief noble magistrate remained out of reach, the members of the bene possessionati group joined officeholding at the very level of the post of chief noble magistrate, the first to yield effective authoriy. And finally, the scions of families with the highest prestige started their career by assuming the office of deputy ispán (alispán). These two latter groups offered access, frequently through appearance at the diets, to offices of national importance, although real opportunities varied greatly in the individual counties.
